The internet offers the ability to connect readers to information that is associated, but not necessarily a part of the original story. For instance, a reference to a particular crime can link to the full text of the law and a quote from a book can link to the full text.
Once OCR programs are quick and readily available, reporters notes can be easily transcribed online. Once audio is quick and easy to stream online, full interviews can be posted online. The push to do this won't be economic, it will come as a response to accountability and ethical concerns. Already, web savvy interviewees are posting full text of their responses online and offering responses to stories.
